How to Choose a Gate Valve Suitable For Water Treatment Processes?

2025.08.08

As a core shut-off device, water treatment gate valves ensure efficient and reliable operation. Selecting the right water treatment gate valve prioritizes evaluating project parameters and media characteristics. Comprehensively consider key indicators such as caliber and pressure compatibility, material corrosion resistance, seal compatibility, and operating actuation methods to ensure valve performance precisely meets requirements.

I. Core Selection Criteria

    Diameter and Pressure Rating
Prioritize matching with pipe size: Available diameters range from DN10 to DN1200. For example, DN150 corresponds to 260mm. Low-pressure applications typically require 1.0-6.4 MPa, while medium- and high-pressure applications require models with a pressure range of 10.0-25.0 MPa. For large-diameter applications (DN200 and above), WEIZIDOM recommends gate valves or butterfly valves for their low pressure drop and high cost-effectiveness. Globe valves are not suitable due to their large footprint.

    Material Matching Media Characteristics

Valve Body Material: Cast iron is used for standard water quality, cast steel is used for medium- and high-pressure environments, and stainless steel (such as 2205 duplex steel) is required for corrosive media (such as industrial wastewater) to resist acid and alkali corrosion.

Sealing Surface Material: Rubber seals (leakage rate <0.01%) are suitable for low-temperature, low-pressure clean water systems. Metal seals (such as 1Cr13 stainless steel overlay, HRC 35-45 hardness) are required for high-temperature, high-pressure, or particulate-containing media.

    Drive and Structural Design

Drive Type: Rising-stem valves facilitate opening monitoring and are suitable for sewage treatment plant pump rooms; concealed-stem valves save space and are suitable for underground pipe corridors or confined areas.

Special Design: Knife-type gate valves are used for applications involving solid particles (such as sludge). They can cut impurities with a diameter of ≤1/3 of the pipe diameter, reducing the risk of clogging.

    II. Water Treatment Scenarios

Municipal Water Supply Systems: Prefer resilient-seated gate valves. The rubber-coated gate disc compensates for the sealing gap, reduces opening and closing torque by 40%, and offers ten-year zero leakage.

Industrial Wastewater Treatment: For highly corrosive media (pH 0-14), fluorine-lined gate valves are required. The PTFE lining should be ≥3mm thick, and the flat-bottomed seat should prevent debris accumulation.

For sludge or high-solids media: The full-bore design of the knife-type gate valve prevents siltation and reduces the failure rate by 75%.

III. Key Points for Installation and Maintenance

Installation Specifications: For horizontal pipes, the valve stem should face upward, and the distance from the pump outlet should be greater than 5 pipe diameters. Welded valve ends must be heat treated after welding to prevent deformation.

    Maintenance Cycles:
Metal-seated valves should be inspected quarterly for sealing surface erosion (depth >0.2mm requires overlay welding repair).
Soft-seated valves should be inspected monthly for rubber aging (cracks >1mm should be replaced immediately).
