Why are three-way check valves commonly used in mining pipelines?

2025.11.12

In critical production stages such as mineral processing, tailings transportation, and thickened water return, slurry transportation systems often face challenges such as high abrasion, strong scouring, large flow fluctuations, and frequent switching. How to achieve slurry diversion, backflow prevention, and equipment protection while ensuring transportation efficiency has always been an important issue in mining engineering design and equipment selection. WEIZODOM recommends using a mining-grade rubber-lined three-way check valve.

Traditional flow diversion systems typically consist of a three-way pipe fitting, two stop/butterfly valves, and a check valve, resulting in a complex structure, numerous leakage points, large space occupation, and high maintenance workload. To improve efficiency and reduce costs, WEIZODOM sells rubber-lined three-way check valves for mining, integrating flow diversion, backflow prevention, and wear resistance into one unit, providing a more reliable and lower-maintenance overall solution for slurry transportation systems.

I. What is a three-way check valve?

The WEIZODOM three-way check valve consists of a three-way flow channel structure, a built-in check mechanism, and a full-lined wear-resistant rubber lining:

Three-way structure: Enables switching, merging, or splitting of slurry between two delivery pipelines;

Check function: When the pump unexpectedly stops or pressure fluctuates, the valve disc automatically closes, effectively preventing backflow;

Wear-resistant rubber lining: The valve body is covered with highly wear-resistant rubber, which absorbs energy through elastic deformation, significantly reducing erosion and wear from mineral particles.

It is a flow divider, a check valve, and a wear-resistant valve. It truly achieves "one valve for multiple uses, replacing multiple valve combinations."

Working principle: The medium flows in through the inlet and, according to process requirements, can be guided to a preset outlet through the built-in valve disc design or by connecting an external actuator (for precise control). Once the inlet pressure disappears or decreases, the check mechanism will automatically close instantly, effectively preventing backflow of the medium.

II. Why is it an ideal valve for slurry transportation? What are its advantages?

1. Significantly Improved Wear Resistance and Lifespan

Slurries contain numerous hard particles, causing severe wear on ordinary metal valves. WEIZODOM employs high-elasticity wear-resistant rubber lining technology, where the rubber surface absorbs impact energy upon particle impact, significantly reducing wear rate. Service life can be several times longer than ordinary metal butterfly/gate valves.

    2. Integrated Design, Reduced System Costs

    3. Automatic Check, Protecting Pumps and Piping Systems

When the pump stops or suddenly loses pressure, backflow can cause:

    • Rapid impeller wear
    • Water hammer impact in pipelines
    • System shutdown or even equipment damage
The three-way check valve automatically closes the outlet the instant the pressure drops, requiring no manual or actuator intervention, ensuring system safety.

    4. Corrosion and Scaling Prevention, Ensuring Unobstructed Flow

The smooth rubber lining surface is less prone to adhesion, reducing the risk of slurry deposition and clogging, and resisting acidic or mildly corrosive media.

III. Key Application Scenarios and Selection Guide

    Typical Application Scenarios:
    Grinding-Classification System Slurry Distribution
    Tailure Conveying Pipeline Switching
    Thickener Return Water Circuit Regulation
Filtration and Dewatering System Feed Diversion
    Pump Station Parallel/Backup Line Switching
Three-way check valves are suitable for conveying highly abrasive slurries.

Five Key Factors to Consider in Selection:
    Slurry Characteristics:
Detailed analysis of particle size, hardness, shape, and slurry concentration (solid content). This is the primary basis for selecting the rubber type and lining thickness.

Operating Parameters: Determine the working pressure, temperature, and flow range to determine the valve's structural strength, sealing rating, and nominal diameter (DN).

Connection Method: Determine the flange standard (e.g., GB, ASME, DIN, etc.) and pressure rating based on the on-site piping design.

Rubber Type: Select the most suitable rubber based on the chemical properties of the medium (pH value, presence of oils, etc.). For example, natural rubber (NR) is suitable for general wear-resistant conditions, while neoprene rubber (CR) offers better oil resistance.

Control Requirements: Determine whether full-scale automatic flow diversion based on fluid dynamics is required, or whether precise automatic control with cylinders or electric actuators is needed.

    IV. Procurement and Maintenance Recommendations:

When procuring, always seek suppliers with a good reputation and extensive application experience in the mining industry. Request wear and corrosion resistance test reports for the rubber lining and confirm the overall design and manufacturing standards of the valve.

    1) Installation and Maintenance: Strictly Follow the Installation Direction: The valve body is usually marked with a medium flow direction arrow; ensure that it is aligned with the process flow direction during installation.

      2) Regular Inspection: Regularly stop the machine to inspect the wear of the rubber lining, paying particular attention to critical components such as the valve disc and seat.

      3) Utilize Replaceable Liners: A well-designed valve allows for the replacement of worn rubber liners without damaging the valve body. This significantly extends the service life of the valve body, representing a more cost-effective strategy throughout its entire lifecycle.
