What is a fully welded ball valve?

2023.07.14

A fully welded ball valve is a type of valve that features a welded construction, where the body and end connections are permanently welded together. Unlike traditional ball valves that have separate body and end connections, fully welded ball valves have a one-piece body design.

The main components of a fully welded ball valve include a spherical ball with a bore through the center, a stem that connects to the ball, and end connections for connecting the valve to the pipeline. The ball has a hole (bore) through it, and when the valve is in the open position, the bore aligns with the pipeline, allowing fluid to flow through. When the valve is closed, the ball rotates 90 degrees to block the flow by aligning the bore perpendicular to the pipeline.

Fully Welded Ball Valve

The welded construction of fully welded ball valves provides several advantages:

Strength and durability:

The one-piece welded body design enhances the strength and structural integrity of the valve, making it suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature applications. The absence of external leak paths minimizes the risk of leakage and ensures long-term durability.

Sealing capability:

Fully welded ball valves typically feature a floating ball design with seats that provide tight sealing. The seals are usually made of materials such as PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) or other resilient materials, ensuring reliable sealing and minimizing leakage.

Resistance to leakage:

The welded construction eliminates potential leak paths associated with flanged or threaded connections. This design feature reduces the risk of external leakage, making fully welded ball valves ideal for applications where leakage control is critical, such as in the oil and gas industry.

Reduced maintenance:

Fully welded ball valves require minimal maintenance due to their robust construction. The welded body eliminates the need for gaskets and bolts, which are common maintenance items in traditional valves. This reduces the need for frequent inspections and maintenance, resulting in cost savings over the valve's lifespan.

Fully welded ball valves have various applications in different industries due to their robust construction and reliable sealing capabilities.

Fully Welded Ball Valve

Some common applications of fully welded ball valves include:

Oil and gas industry:

Fully welded ball valves are widely used in the oil and gas industry for both onshore and offshore applications. They are suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature environments, providing excellent performance in pipelines, refineries, petrochemical plants, and LNG terminals.

Chemical industry:

The chemical industry requires valves that can handle corrosive and aggressive fluids. Fully welded ball valves with corrosion-resistant materials, such as stainless steel or special alloys, are used to control the flow of chemicals in manufacturing processes and storage facilities.

Water and wastewater treatment:

Fully welded ball valves are employed in water and wastewater treatment plants to control the flow of water, slurries, and various fluids. They are preferred for their ability to handle high pressures, reduce leakage, and provide tight shut-off, ensuring efficient operation and minimizing water loss.

Power generation:

Power plants, including thermal power plants and nuclear power plants, utilize fully welded ball valves for controlling the flow of steam, condensate, and other media. These valves can withstand high temperatures and pressures, contributing to the safe and reliable operation of power generation facilities.

Pipeline transportation:

Fully welded ball valves are commonly used in pipeline systems for the transportation of oil, gas, and other fluids over long distances. Their compact design and high-pressure capabilities make them suitable for buried or underground pipelines, reducing the risk of leakage and ensuring efficient flow control.

Mining industry:

In mining operations, fully welded ball valves are employed to control the flow of slurry, water, and chemicals used in mineral processing. Their robust construction and abrasion-resistant materials enable them to withstand the harsh conditions and abrasive media encountered in mining operations.

HVAC systems:

Fully welded ball valves find applications in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. They are used for controlling the flow of water and other fluids in HVAC systems of commercial buildings, hospitals, and industrial facilities.

Fire protection systems:

Fully welded ball valves are crucial components in fire protection systems, including fire sprinkler systems and fire suppression systems. These valves ensure reliable shut-off and quick response in case of a fire, preventing the spread of fire and protecting lives and property.
